Know the facts.

Among Ontarians aged 25 to 34, 1 of every 8 deaths is related to opioid use.
(Gomes et al. (2014). The burden of premature opioid-related mortality. Addiction, 109: 1482-8.)

In Canada, opioid overdoses now account for more deaths than automobile accidents.
In 2016, the rate of opioid-related deaths in Canada was 7.9 per 100 000 (a total of 2,861 deaths), and the number of deaths continues to increase. The opioid epidemic affecting both Canada and the United States is fuelled by a combination of overprescribing as well as the influx of highly potent illegal synthetic opioids, such as illicitly manufactured fentanyl, notes the CMAJ.
